If two people believe in something, really believe, anything, even the impossible, is possible. (Richard Castle, 4.06)

If two people believe in something, really believe, anything, even the impossible, is possible. (Richard Castle, 4.06)

Captain Montgomery once said to me that for us, there is no victory. There are only battles. And in the end, the best you can hope for is to find a place to make your stand. And if you’re very lucky, you find someone to stand with you.

Rick Castle quotes (8 of my favourites)

2011 - Best of Castle: Rick Castle

2011 - Best of Castle: Kate Beckett

2011 - Best of Castle: Caskett

I love you, Kate.

Castle: There’s always a story. Always a chain of events makes everything make sense. Take you for example. Under normal circumstances, you should not be here. Most smart, good-looking women become lawyers, not cops. And, yet, here you are. Why?
Beckett: I don’t know, Rick. You’re the novelist. You tell me.
Castle: Well, you’re not Bridge and Tunnel — no trace of the boroughs when you talk, so that means Manhattan. That means money. You went to college. Probably a pretty good one. You had options. Yeah, you had lots of options. Better options. More socially acceptable options. And you still chose this. That tells me something happened. Not to you, you’re wounded, but you’re not that wounded. It was someone you cared about. It was someone you loved. And you probably could have lived with that, but the person responsible was never caught. And, that Detective Beckett, is why you’re here.
Beckett: Cute trick. But don’t think you know me.
Castle: The point is, there’s always a story, you just have to find it.
(1.01 - Flowers For Your Grave)

Beckett: By the way, it was my mother, not my father. We were supposed to go to dinner together - my mom, my Dad, and I, and she was gonna meet us at the restaurant, but she never showed. Two hours later, we went home, and there was a detective waiting for us. Detective Raglin. They found her body. She had been stabbed.
Castle: A robbery?
Beckett: No. She still had her money and purse and jewelry. And it wasn’t a sexual assault, either. They attributed it to gang violence. Random wayward event. So, just like in Melanie’s case, they couldn’t think outside the box. So, they just tries to package it up nicely. And the killer was never caught.
Castle: Why do you wear the watch?
Beckett: My Dad took her death hard. He’s sober now. Five years. So, this is for the life that I saved. And… this is for the life that I lost. So, I guess your Nikki Heat has a backstory now, Castle.
(1.05 - A Chill Goes Through Her Veins)

Martha: It sounded to me like you were looking into Detective Beckett’s mother’s murder.
Castle: Must you always eavesdrop?
Martha: I wasn’t eavesdropping. I happened to walk by your office door. I live here, too, you know.
Castle: Yes. I’m aware.
Martha: So does she know you’re poking into her mother’s case?
Castle: What’s the sense in telling her until I find something new?
Martha: Well, you ever stop to think you’re invading her privacy?
Castle: I’m not poking through her underwear drawer. I’m investigating her mother’s murder.
Martha: You are digging up her past, darling, without her permission. Now you either tell her or leave it alone.

Castle: It’s about your mother’s case. Have you ever thought about… reopening it?
Beckett: What are you doing?
Castle: Nothing. I just thought if we worked together
Beckett: No.
Castle: I have resources.
Beckett: Castle, you touch my mom’s case, and you and I are done. Do you understand?
Castle: Okay. … Why don’t you want to investigate it?
Beckett: Same reason a recovering alcoholic doesn’t drink. You don’t think I haven’t been down there? You don’t think I haven’t memorized every line in that file? My first three years on the force, every off-duty moment was spent looking for something someone missed. It took me a year of therapy to realize if I didn’t let it go, it was gonna destroy me. And so I let it go.
Castle: Sorry. I didn’t know.
Beckett: Yeah, well, now you do.

Beckett: You look awfully serious. Is everything okay?
Castle: Take a seat.
Beckett: What?
Castle: Sit down.
Beckett: Castle, what’s going on?
Castle: It’s about your mother.
(1.10 - A Death in the Family)

Murray: I used homographic reconstruction of Coonan’s wounds to generate a 3D model of the blade used. It’s a special operations group knife, the kind favoured by special forces in Gulf War One. He kills with a single blow, using these other wounds to camouflage the skill with which the initial stroke was delivered. The very same method and the very same weapon that the killer employed ten years ago.
Beckett: Lanie?
Lanie: I’m so sorry.
Murray: Detective Beckett, there is no doubt in my mind that Jack Coonan was killed by the same man who murdered your mother.
Beckett: I am the investigator of record on this case. You had no right to withhold evidence from me!
Lanie: Well, what did you expect? The last time Castle tried to talk to you about your mother’s murder you bit his head off.
Beckett: Please, Lanie.
Lanie: I noticed the wound similarity. I reached out to Dr Murray. I held off from telling you until I knew the evidence was rock solid. Beckett, we came to you the moment we were sure.
Montgomery: Beckett. Can I have a word with you? Poor man’s pain killer. I know your mother’s murder was the reason you became a cop. And I know how you almost lost yourself trying to solve her case the first time you tried. I figured sooner or later when you were ready, you’d want to take another run at it. I just never expected her killer to come around and sucker punch you like this. Kate, listen to me. You’re the finest homicide I’ve ever trained, bar none and I want you to stay on this one if you can, if you’re up to it; but I wouldn’t be doing my job as your captain if I didn’t ask. Can you handle this?
Beckett: I’m sorry sir, I can’t.

Beckett: It wasn’t your fault, you know.
Castle: I overstepped. I came down here to say that I was sorry, and that I’m through. I can’t shadow you anymore. if it wasn’t for me…
Beckett: If it wasn’t for you I would have never found my mom’s killer. And some day soon I’m going to find the sons of bitch who had Coonan kill her, and I’d like you around when I do. And if you tell anyone what I’m about to say there’s going to be another shooting but… I’ve gotten used to you pulling my pigtails. I’ve a hard job, Castle, and having you around makes it a little more fun.
Castle: Your secret’s safe with me.
(2.13 - Sucker Punch)

Castle: Montgomery booted us off the Raglan murder, but he didn’t say anything about your mother’s case, did he? Here’s my plan… I sneak back into the station, wearing a hat. Montgomery always takes a coffee break fifteen minutes after the hour. I get your mother’s file, wearing soft shoes, the south entrance says… what?
Beckett: Come on Castle, I’ve gotta show you something.
Castle: You know sometimes I forget you live with this every day.

Beckett: We booked you as John Doe, you sure as hell aren’t Hal Lockwood. Who hired you? I put a lot of people in this place. Some of them want to kill me, others never been treated so fairly in their lives. So they form this attachment to me, it’s like I’m their favourite school teacher. Some of those people might visit you while you’re in here, like the ghosts that visit Scrooge. And after some time with them you might find yourself a changed man. So I will be back here week after week to ask you who hired you til that miracle occurs.
(3.13 - Knockdown)

Jim: What happens when she finds him? I’ve already lost my wife over this. I’ve already lost … No, look. It took me years but I’ve made my peace with that. But Katie? She won’t listen to me. And she won’t back down. Not unless someone can convince her that her life is worth more than her mother’s death. Look, she cares about you, Rick. And unless you’re a lot dumber than you look, I know you care about her. Don’t let her throw her life away.

Castle: Beckett everyone associated with this case is dead. Everyone. First your mom and her colleagues, then Raglan, now McCallister. You know they’re coming for you next.
Beckett: Captain Montgomery’s got a protective detail on me. It wasn’t that hard to spot.
Castle: That’s not going to be enough to stop Lockwood, you know that. Think of what they’re up against. Professional killers? Look, I … I’ve been working with you for three years You know me. I’m the guy who says we can move that rubber tree plant but you know what Beckett? I don’t think we’re going to win this.
Beckett: Castle, they killed my mother! What do you want me to do here?
Castle: Walk away. They’re going to kill you, Kate. And if you don’t care about that, at least think about how that’s going to affect the people that love you. You really want to put your dad through that? And what about Josh?
Beckett: And what about you, Rick?
Castle: Well of course I don’t want anything to happen to you. I’m your partner. I’m your friend!
Beckett: Is that what we are?
Castle: No, you know what? I don’t know what we are. We kiss, and then we never talk about it. We nearly die, frozen in each other’s arms, but we never talk about it. So no, I’ve got no clue what we are. I know I don’t want to see you throw your life away!
Beckett: Yeah well last time I checked, it was my life, not your personal jungle gym. And for the past three years I’ve been running around with the school’s funniest kid. And it’s not enough.
Castle: You know what? This isn’t about your mother’s case anymore. This is about you needing a place to hide. Because you’ve been chasing this thing so long you’re afraid to find out who you are without it.
Beckett: You don’t know me, Castle. You think you do, but you don’t.
Castle: I know you crawled inside your mother’s murder and didn’t come out. I know you hide there, same way you hide in these nowhere relationships with men you don’t love. You could be happy, Kate. You deserve to be happy. But you’re afraid.
Beckett: You know what we are, Castle? We are over. Now get out.
(3.24 - Knockout)

Beckett: After my mother was killed, something inside me changed. It’s like I built up this wall inside. And I don’t know, I guess I just didn’t want to hurt like that again. I know I’m not going to be the kind of person that I want to be, I know that I’m not going … I’m not going to have the kind of relationship that I want until that wall comes down. And it’s not going to happen until I put this thing to rest.
Castle: Then I suppose we’re just going to have to find these guys and take them down.

Castle: I’m just saying, what if he’s not our guy? What if the fire was an accident?
Beckett: It wasn’t an accident. I know it wasn’t an accident.
Castle: You can’t know that.
Beckett: I can. Because if this was an accident I’ve got nowhere to start. If this was an accident I’ve got nothing. The guy who shot me is gone. Dick Coonan, gone. Hal Lockwood, gone. Montgomery, gone. My mom … everybody is gone, Castle.

Castle: Do you remember what you told me the first time I brought up your mother’s case? That if you got started again, you wouldn’t stop. You said it would probably destroy you –
Beckett: Yeah well, I didn’t have any leads then.
Castle: We don’t have any now.
Beckett: Look, Castle, I got a little emotional last night. I’m … I’m fine.
Castle: No you’re not. And you know you’re not. You’ve been back here three days and you’re already in a free fall. I’m not telling you to walk away, I’m just saying … give it time. Just until you get your bearings again.
Beckett: How am I supposed to get my bearings when someone out there wants me dead?
Castle: By not letting them rob you of your life. I promise you, we will figure this out. We will find them and we will make them pay. Just not today.
Beckett: Castle, if I don’t do this, I don’t know who I am.
Castle: You’re who you always were. You’re the one who honors the victims. You’re the one who can bring Sonya’s family some peace.
(4.01 - Rise)

Beckett: I wanna be more than who I am. But I don’t know if I don’t know how to do that without letting my mom down.
Burke: She’s dead, Kate. You can’t let her down. The only person you can let down is yourself. Her death is a part of you, and you’re gonna have to make peace with that. Just as you’re gonna have to make peace with the scars from the shooting. But it doesn’t have to limit you.
Beckett: How am I supposed to let go?
Burke: I can help you. But the question is, are you ready?
Beckett: Yeah, I think I am.
(4.09 - Kill Shot)
